Day of the Dead English Comprehension Reading Activity Worksheet KS3/ Functional Skills. Halloween
An English Reading Comprehension Activity.
This resource gives the learner an overview of the celebration: Day of the Dead.
Learners will read the text and then answer ten skimming and scanning questions based on this document. There is also an extension question.
Answers are provided so that learners can self mark.
DNA by Dennis Kelly Character Traits Worksheet and Extension Task. GCSE English Literature
An A3 worksheet which gives the learner a list of character traits and asks them which characters in the play possess these traits.
There is also an extension task to complete and the learner will be asked to use evidence from the text to support their choices.
GCSE Poetry Anthology Themes Power and Conflict Revision Cards / Display / Task. English Literature
Ideal for KS4 students to help them with remembering which poems fall under which key theme.
Uses for this document
Get your learners to pick one of the eight key themes. For each poem under that theme, they have to locate a quote from that poem. The quote should relate to the theme.
Example:

This is a 24 page task booklet based on the book: Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror. I created this booklet for my KS3 English reading class.

This is a PPT which will help L1/L2 learners to answer the reading assessment’s compare and contrast question. This question is worth 10 – 13% of the papers overall mark! Therefore, it is important learners know how to answer it.

The last slide includes a portion of Katy Perry’s song ‘Roar.’ Learners will be asked to identify any of the eight figurative language devices that they have just learnt about.
English Literature DNA by Dennis Kelly - Character Description & Scenes Revision A3 Mapping Sheet
An A3 PDF resource that I created and used with my mixed ability KS3 English class.
I got the learners to write down each character in the play and asked them to write down the character’s personality traits. They then drew each character (their interpretation of what they thought that character would look like).
Learners were also asked to pick a key quote from the play that best reflected that character’s personality. Following this, they then wrote an overview of each scene. This was in preparation for a practice essay question.

54 Flash card prompts which will help to spark your learners’ imaginations.
These flash cards contain pictures from a number of different fictional genres: gothic, western, sci-fi, historical, romance, modern and fantasy.
Instructions: Print out the cards double sided. One side will have the picture prompts on and the other a zig zag pattern. Cut the cards out and laminate them. Get your learners to pick one card each and write a story or description by using the pictures as a stimulus.

Poetry Anthology Context Revision 'Quiz' Knowledge GCSE Power & Conflict
This PPT was used as part of a revision session.
I displayed a piece of context on the interactive white board from the PPT. Each piece related to one of the fifteen poems in the anthology. We read through the slide as a class and they were then asked which poem the information related to. They would then write the contextual information in their exercise books to be used for revision purposes.
The information is off free resources I found during Google searches. I then compiled it into this PPT.
Fact or Opinion English Functional Skills L1 & L2 Activity / Worksheet & Answers - Reading
A worksheet aimed at L1 & L2 learners. This will be helpful as they are required to know the difference between a fact and opinion, in order to gain marks on their reading examination
Get your learners to read each statement on the page. They can highlight the facts in one colour and the opinions in answer colour. Go through the answers as a class afterwards. Answer sheet is provided.
